Takama Soshichi 高間惣七
1889-1974 Born in Kyobashi, Tokyo.
A Western-style painter active from the Taisho through the Showa periods. He entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1908 and graduated in 1916. His painting Morning Sun was first accepted for the 7th Bunten in 1913, and he subsequently exhibited at the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. After receiving the Special Prize at the 1st Teiten in 1919, he won consecutive Special Prizes and later served as a member and juror of the Teiten. In 1924, he co-founded the Kaijusha Art Society, and in 1933 became a founding member of the Tokokai Art Association. After the war, he served as a juror for the Nitten before joining the Dokuritsu Art Association in 1955. Known for his poetic landscapes, still lifes, and bird paintings, he received the Excellence Prize at the Japan International Art Exhibition (1959), the Yokohama Cultural Award (1960), and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Class (1973). His younger sister was the painter Takama Fudeko, who died at a young age.
